Financial plan

Students from countries outside the European Union must have sufficient resources to follow an academic programme in Belgium.

This requirement is checked by both the academic institution and the immigration office.

The financing plan that you must submit to the university of Liège aims at describing the nature, the source and the amount of the resources that you can gather to finance your studies.

In order to obtain a student visa, you must prove that you have sufficient means of subsistence in Belgium to cover your stay, your healthcare and your return home.

This proof can consist in either:

  1. Proof of scholarship or student loan
  2. Statement of financial responsibility (annex 32)
  3. Self-financing of studies
  4. Deposit of a sum of money on a bank account belonging to the academic institution where you are enrolled or admitted for enrolment

This 4th option is only open to students who have already received an authorisation of enrolment for the coming academic year.

The amount deposited is then returned as monthly allowances, wired to a bank account opened by the student upon arrival in Belgium.

Students who choose this option receive a proof of deposit, which they must present to consular services along with their visa application. This document specifies the amount received by the university, as well as the monthly allowance that will be given to the student.

The university of Liège offers this service to students who wish to take advantage of this possibility.

What amount must be deposited?

The minimum amount required by the immigration office, i.e. 604 EUR/month, for a total of 7,248 EUR for one year of studies.

In addition, the university of Liège wishes to have a guarantee that the registration fees will be paid. It therefore requires that the 835 EUR registration fee be deposited, as well as any additional fees (this sum is specified in the acceptance letter: 0 EUR, 1,923 EUR or 3,845 EUR, depending on the student's nationality and the academic programme).

The amount to deposit will therefore be either:

  • 8,083 EUR: 7,248 EUR + 835 EUR
  • 10,006 EUR: 7,248 EUR + 835 EUR + 1,923 EUR
  • 11,928 EUR: 7,248 EUR + 835 EUR + 3,845 EUR

The exact sum must be wired as a single deposit (all transfer fees are to be paid by the student).

The university will accept no deposits that are not equal to the totals indicated above.

On what account should the funds be transferred?

Account number 340-1558078-05 with bank ING, 24 avenue Marnix in Brussels (B-1000)

IBAN: BE96 3401 5580 7805
BIC : BBRUBEBB
"Patrimoine Université de Liège"
"Dépôts étudiants hors UE"
Place du XX août, 7
4000 Liège

In the transfer notes, students must indicate their surname, first name and date of birth.

Are other formalities required to obtain the proof of transfer?

At the same time as the transfer, students must sign the agreement in annex and send it to the ULg.

The document should be scanned and sent to the following address: Carine.Libert@ulg.ac.be.

Upon receipt of the deposit AND of the signed agreement, the ULg will send the proof of deposit to the student by email.

What steps should be followed upon arrival?

Students notify the admissions service of their date of arrival (Ms. Libert – +32 (0)4 366 96 69 – Carine.Libert@ulg.ac.be). You must make an appointment for this, as we will prepare a prepaid bank card with your first allowance.

The next steps are:

  1. complete your registration to the university
  2. find accommodation
  3. register to the city's administration
  4. open a bank account
  5. provide the ULg with your account number

Is 604 EUR enough to live for one month in Belgium?

As indicated in the annexed agreement, students must be aware that the sum of 604 EUR is currently insufficient to live on during their studies. Is it therefore VITAL that students have other sources of financing, including to pay for a security deposit for their accommodation upon arrival. Students can consult the university's website for information on the cost of a year of studies (www.ulg.ac.be/cout-etudes).
