The Radius approach

One of the main ambitions of the ‘Project for the ULg’ is to revise the mechanisms by which financial, human and building resources are allocated by no longer taking into account solely the teaching load but by also considering the quality of research.

The evaluation process, initiated by this same project and concerning both teaching and research activities, represents the wish to highlight the ULg's needs and lines of force through the active participation of the whole of the Institution's actors.

It was in this context that Radius (Data and Strategic Use Information Gathering Analysis Unit) was born, being made official by the Board of Directors and Executive Bureau at its meeting of October 14, 2009.

It involves on the one hand a programme of institutional reporting which has the objective of supplying the Rector, the Authorities and various decision makers with management guidelines in areas such as teaching, research, scientific production, finances, human resources, real estate, etc.

These management guidelines as well as key indicators related to the University's different activities constitute an aid to decision making and should facilitate the running of the University as much as institutional communication.

On the other hand Radius also aims, through implementing a benchmarking approach, to feed the authorities’ thinking through of the university landscape on a Belgian, European and global level.

The Radius Unit

On the basis of existing institutional databases or through the gathering of specific information the operating unit of the Radius project works closely with the appropriate administrative departments as well as research sectors and the Faculties in order to:

    • Define the key-indicators specific to the areas of teaching, research, finances, human resources, real estate, etc. and ensure their follow-up support
    • Create specific management guidelines for each type of user and to ensure that they are updated
    • Co-ordinate the construction of an institutional Datawarehouse, carried out with the support of SEGI (the University's General IT Service).

It also works closely with the Quality Management and Support Service (SMAQ) as far developing useful indicators for internal and external evaluation processes is concerned.

The communication of the work carried out within the framework of the Radius project will shortly be effected through a MyULg intranet sub-section available to the whole of the university community and adapted to the user's profile.

Integrated within the Radius Unit, the Universities Strategic Analysis Unit (CASU) gathers and analyses information related to the development of the policies and practices of the university world in the wider sense. It communicates via its blog, at http://casu.blogs.ulg.ac.be.
