Geography

Why study geography today ?

We are confronted with major environmental and social challenges, with interactions between humankind and the environment becoming ever more critical.

Sciences 9

In this context, modern geography attempts to better understand our planet and all its complexities, whether human or natural. This discipline allows to describe, represent and analyse locations, territories and phenomena on the Earth's surface.

Geography is traditionnaly divided between physical and human geography; more recently, owing to technological evolutions, a third category was added : geomatics.
Geography now requires the application of the methods from mathematical, physical and natural sciences, the most recent information acquisition and management techniques, as well as economic and social science approaches.

Living, exploiting, sharing and moving, managing the environment and planning space usage... such issues must be tackled by human societies, and geography endeavours to offer solutions.

Why study geography in Liège ?

Geography in Liège offers :

  • a theoretical and practical approach of the discipline
  • several fields of expertise that are present in no other French-speaking university in Belgium
  • an international research and teaching environment (many Erasmus opportunities and internships abroad...)

Four areas of geography can be studied :

- physical geography, including climatology
- economic and social geography
- geomatics and geometrology
- geography teaching

In physical geography, the main fields of expertise are geomorphology, hydrology and climatology. Research activities are done not only in the Northwest of Europe and in the polar regions (reductions in sea ice) but also more and more in developing countries (Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia).

In economic and social geography, the main fields of expertise are territorial development, the localisation of economic activities, and the study of landscapes. This scientific expertise has allowed to study the feasibility of many projects for regional planning and development, whether public or private.

In the field of geomatics-geometrology, the University of Liège constantly establishes itself as a centre of reference like no other in French-speaking Belgium. Fields of expertise include spatial data acquisition methods (GNSS, topometry, remote sensing...) and geographical information processing and management (SIG, spatial analyses).

Finally, the teaching of geography has also become an increasingly recognised research and education hub at an international level, due to its pedagogical productions (treaties, manuals, dossiers, atlases) and the development of new multimedia tools.
