History of Art and Archaeology : Musicology

Understanding music

Philo 29

Music has been taught in universities in Europe since their foundation. However, it is not a question of learning an instrument or a writing technique, but rather a question of understanding how composition functions, how music participates in the social and cultural practices of a time and place, how music affects the listeners.

Musicology studies are therefore anchored in the historical perspective, as well as in art history, and in a specific analytical perspective.

The musicology programme at the University of Liège offers a triple approach :

-    history
-    history of art
-    and, in particular, musicology based on a practice but also an analysis of the history of music
