French and Romance Languages and Literatures (including French as a Second Language)

 

Do you enjoy reading and analysing literature ? Do you enjoy practising languages, and are you interested in their structure ? Are you fond of words and other language-related subjects ? Do you enjoy writing and expressing your critical opinions ?

Studies in French and romance language and literature are well-suited to your expectations, as they develop your inclination for the methodological and historical study, from the early origins to modern times, of linguistic and literary aspects that are central to our French and romance culture.

Languages and letters

The ULg's "Romance languages and literatures" programme offers two original features that are not found in other European academic programmes, which separate the study of languages and linguistics from that of literature.

The first of these originalities is the close relation between French language and literature.

The other is that French is taught along with another romance language (Italian or Spanish), from a linguistic aspect as well as a literary one.

This study structure results in an education that is very general at first (at the bachelor level), focusing on the acquisition of encyclopaedic and humanistic knowledge. A specialisation is chosen at the master level, where you develop a final project on a subject of your choosing. The bachelor programmes can provide you with early insight on which specialisation you will choose in later years.

The favoured educational tool in this programme is language. It is approached from a variety of perspectives : its structure, its history, its aesthetic uses (mainly through literature), its communication function, and its role as a vector for cultural representations. This means that the educational offering, while it follows a strong philological tradition, is also turning towards more modernity, and becoming more relevant in our society where it is vital to master language and cultural codes, and to be able to build a critical reflection on how they work.
