The following is regulated by articles 49 to 56 of the decree of March 31, 2004 defining higher education, promoting its integration within the European space for higher education and refinancing the universities.

People who hold one or more of the following credentials shall be admitted to first-cycle programmes of study:

1 - a certificate of higher secondary education awarded within the French-speaking Community (and accompanied, up until
the 1992-1993 school year, by a diploma attesting aptitude for higher education)

2 - a diploma granted by a school of higher education within the French-speaking Community that confers an academic degree to someone, or else a diploma awarded by a university institution or a school offering instruction in some area of higher education itself, in accordance with previous legislation.

3 - a degree in higher education, issued by a school that offers instruction in the form of continuing adult education

4 - a letter in support of admission to a particular programme mentioned in the letter, and which attests that they successfully passed an examination for admission administered by an institution of higher education, or by a Jury attached directly to
the French-speaking Community

5- a diploma, degree or other certificate of study similar to those described above, issued by the Dutch-speaking Community,
by the German-speaking Community, or by the Royal Military School

6- a diploma, degree or certificate of study from a foreign country, which is recognized as the equivalent of those mentioned under numbers 1-3 above through the application of a law, decree, European directive or international convention

7- a diploma, degree or certificate of study from a foreign country judged to be comparable by a jury to those mentioned under 1-3 above

8 - a diploma attesting the student's aptitude for higher education (DAES) conferred by a jury of the French-speaking Community.

Complementary requirements for the areas of veterinary medicine, physiotherapy and rehabilitation and speech and language therapy

Non-resident students can register for first-cycle programmes of study in veterinary medicine, physiotherapy and rehabilitation and speech and language therapy, depending on grades in these subjects they have received; but they must also have an attestation that proves that they are part of the quota for non-resident students who would be authorized to register after passing the examinations. Such students must also meet the general requirements for admission described above.

Special conditions for engineering sciences

Only students who have an attestation that they have passed a special admissions examination can enter first-cycle studies in the area of engineering sciences with a view to obtaining the qualification normally granted upon successful completion. This attestation provides admission to all first-cycle studies, except to the second part of subject areas that are divided into two parts.

Special condition for registering for programmes of study that are divided into two parts (medicine and dentistry)

Only students that have received, at the end of their first year of study an attestation from the jury for orientation, can pass on to the second part of the first cycle .

Transitional equivalency

An academic degree of the second cycle granted in accordance with dispositions that existed prior to the decree of March 31, 2004 has as much value in terms of meeting admission requirements of programmes of study as a Master's degree that required 120 credits.
