Viva voce

Then there's the viva voce of the thesis ...

  • When the thesis committee considers that the thesis is admissible, the Doctoral College decides on the members of the thesis jury;
  • The doctoralstudent has the first version of his/her thesis printed out and provides it to the members of the jury ;
  • The jury gives its opinion on the work, provides its comments and indicates to the doctoral student any additional work that it would like to see carried out before the public viva voce. Some colleges allow for a private viva voce before the public one ;
  • The doctoral student carries out the modifications requested by the jury, prints out the final version of his/her thesis and provides it to the members of the jury at least two months before the intended date for the viva voce ;
  • The doctoral student files two copies of his/her thesis (archives of the School and library) at the Apparitorat (Student Affairs office)
  • The viva voce is announced publicly (intranet, display boards in faculties...)  at least one month beforehand ;
  • The doctoral student presents his/her thesis in public by explaining his/her work verbally then answering the questions from the members of the juryThe members of the jury withdraw to deliberate immediately. The success or failure is announced just afterwards. No grade is attributed anymore since the Bologna reform;
  • The new doctor writes a brief summary of his/her thesis by popularising (positively) his/her text in order for it to be readily accessible to uninitiated people so that the University can circulate this summary to the scientific community.
