Doctoral thesis

What is a PhD course ?

PhD courses are defined by the “Bologna” French Community Decree as the third cycle of university studies leading to the academic title of "doctor", granted after a viva voce, corresponding overall to at least 180 credits (min. 3 years) achieved after an initial course of at least 300 credits leading to the academic title of "master".

The PhD test consists in:

  • the personalised PhD training including activities that may be organised by the thematic doctoral school, to be assessed by the doctoral college;
  • the drafting either of an original dissertation whose format, structure, length and language are defined by the PhD regulations of each faculty, or the drawing up, in the conditions set out by these same faculty regulations, of an essay of the applicant showing the interest of a coherent series of publications and achievements of which the applicant is the author or co-author;
  • a public presentation of this work highlighting its qualities, its originality and the scientific popularisation capacities of the applicant.

In practice, the PhD course is a long-term test, a source of great satisfaction and of small and large difficulties, where you learn to excel and stretch yourself and to assert yourself, but it is well worth daring to go for it...
