French Community research allowance

Research grants from the French Community

The French Community gives grants to its academies, relying on a defined allocation grid. These are dedicated to two complementary actions: Special Research Funds (FSR) and Joint Research Actions (ARC).

For the Special Research Funds, the Wallonia-Europe Academy has chosen to delegate the management to the university members, according to their priority actions.  Whereas for the Joint Research Actions, the universities consult each other.

Special Research Funds (FSR)

Within the ULg, the FSR are allocated to five complementary programmes aiming at meeting with the needs of the research units for ongoing or developing projects:

Call for research projects

  • Classic credits, for functioning and equipment expenses
  • Credits for scientific infrastructures , enabling research teams to acquire important research equipment
  • Start-up credits, restricted to new members of the academic body, young scientists or permanent FNRS researchers to begin research

Each year, the Research Council publishes the calls for projects, draws up a selection of the best projects assessed by the faculties, and proposes an allocation of funds to the Board of Directors.

Permanent support :

  • The Solidarity Fund may bear the costs of the salary of a ULg researcher between two research contracts, in order to avoid interrupting the latter’s work
  • The Emergency Fund considers special situations causing difficulties for the research teams

Motivated requests for support are to be presented to the President, Chairman of the Research Council, who examines their relevance, with the board, and decides, when appropriate, to award these exceptional grants.

Joint Research Actions (ARC)

This programme aims at developing centres of excellence, a priority for the institution, through coherent projects introduced by  experienced teams. They spread over 5 years and integrate preferably inter-disciplinary teams. The projects are submitted to the review of international specialists, before being examined by the Research Council.
