University of the Greater Region

The University of Liège is engaged in an innovative and strategic partnership with the neighbouring universities of the Greater Region.

This partnership highlights cultural diversity and encourages intercultural dialogue in a spirit of mutual respect.  The project aims to promote knowledge of foreign languages and identify the complementarities of each partner through academic, scientific and administrative collaboration.

Steeped in Latin and Germanic cultures, the Greater region is comprised of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, Lorraine (France), the Walloon Region, and the French- and German-speaking communities of Belgium.

This crossborder collaboration brings together five member universities (Sarrebrück, Luxemburg, Metz, Nancy, and Liège) and two associate universities (Trier and Kaiserslautern) within the framework of the Interreg IVA program (2007-2013). The principal objective of this alliance is to create a common sphere in the field of higher education and research in line with the Bologna process.

This project also aims to enhance and optimize contacts between the universities of the Greater Region in order that lasting collaborations be formed and similar operational procedures adopted, particularly in areas such as teacher and student mobility, the development of common teaching and research programs, the attractiveness of programs on offer, opening up to a greater number of partners, etc.

The project financed for a period of three years to be followed by a six-month evaluation phase hinges on five cooperation modules:

1. Governance (coordinator: University of Saarland, deputy coordinator: University of Liège);
2. Mobility (coordinator: University of Luxemburg, deputy coordinator: Paul Verlaine University);
3. Education (coordinator: Paul Verlaine University, deputy coordinator: University of Saarland);
4. Research (coordinator: University of Nancy, deputy coordinator: University of Luxemburg);
5. Cooperation (coordinator: University of Liège, deputy coordinator: University of Nancy).

The realization of this association between the Universities of the Greater Region will hopefully ultimately lead to a more precise definition of our institutions and our Region through the implementation of a common methodology, institutional harmonization, networking of all administrations, innovations in matters of training and research, specificity of courses of study, etc.
