Research position

Obtaining a research position

Obtaining a position as a researcher for performing research work is not always easy, both for early-stage researchers and for those who have already finished their doctoral education. The career is fascinating, the University is hospitable and friendly, and several people wish to continue to contribute their expertise and passion there. The number of permanent position is unfortunately low, but they do exist …

Temporary research position

Several possibilities exist for temporary research position:

  • an assistant lecturer generally gives the possibility to combine both an educational supervision activity for students and a research activity
  • a doctoral student grant, attributed either by the University, or by the FNRS or the FRIA, enables to prepare a doctorate
  • a research assistant at the FNRS, for doctors with a very high-level scientific profile
  • a post-doctoral student grant, given by the FNRS, by the University from its own funds or in relation to European projects – the researcher has to work within an international mobility framework
  • a researcher, beginning a career or experienced, with a research contract led by a research team at the ULg.

Permanent research position

Permanent research positions appear to be less available and less accessible. However, the opportunities available to researchers are often misjudged, as only academic streams seem to be envisaged. A researcher may obtain a permanent position by applying:

  • for a permanent researcher position at the University
  • to be an academic lecturer – he/she will be even more appreciated after having carried out significant research experience abroad
  • to the FNRS (qualified researcher)
  •  to a firm with a significant research activity

The ULg is currently studying the possibility of giving permanent positions to researchers appointed through research contracts, in given conditions. It thus intends to reinforce its commitment to the European Researcher’s Charter.
