'Fan Coaching' honoured in Europe

03/02/2012

The ‘Fan Coaching’ not for profit association, which was created out of work carried out in the field of criminology at the ULg, has received the European Football Supporters Award.

Created in 2005 (on the occasion of the commemoration of the twenty anniversary of the Heysel tragedy), the European Football Supporters Award (EFSA) is in its seventh edition this year. With the support of UEFA, the objective of the prize is to change mentalities within the stadiums in fostering a convivial atmosphere. To do so, it annually awards a group of supporters or an association which has developed a positive action project around the same passion, football.

The jury composed of representatives of the European Commission, the Council of Europe, the European Sports Magazine association (ESM), the city of Brussels, the ‘Sport and Citizenship’ association and representatives of the EFSA, has this year designated as the winner the Liège association, ‘Fan Coaching’. It is the first time a Belgian association has won the EFSA.

For twenty years now, thanks to a partnership between the City of Liège, the University of Liège and Standard de Liège football club, and with the support of the Federal Interior Public Service department, the ‘Fan Coaching’ association has developed numerous social and educational actions against violence by involving supporters. Its expertise is also recognised by national and international institutions (such as the European Council and the European Union).

The concept and methods of ‘Fan coaching’ (prevention of violence in sport) spring from a research-action project carried out at the University of Liège. The operational work carried out in the field has been developed in benefiting from research work carried out at the ULg, principally in the area of criminology, led by Professor Georges KELLENS; in recent years it has been enriched by work in psychology carried out by Professor Pr Anne-Sophie NYSSEN.
