The day following the shootings which have plunged the whole of the city of Liège into mourning, I wish to express my support for the numerous victims of this senseless act. The University authorities and the whole of the university community join me in offering their sincerest condolences to the families of the people who have lost their lives, and in hoping for a swift recovery to the people who have been injured and who are still, for the most part, in hospital.
For many of our youth, as is the case for all of us, it is not easy to pick up our daily activities after such a tragedy. The emotions are still strong and tangible, and the statements used to describe the unacceptable are often violent. I would like to add my voice to those of various public personalities and representatives in asking that the reactions to the event are expressed with calm, respect and dignity. The greatest tribute we can pay to the victims is not to echo the expressions of hatred which are rife on numerous blogs and social media networks.
