Sickness - Healthcare insurance

In Belgium, you must take out Personal Healthcare Insurance. In all cases, you must join a health insurance company.

As soon as you arrive in Belgium you must register with a health insurance company of your choice, show them your health insurance card and give them your Belgian account number. In this case, a good proportion of medical expenses incurred in Belgium will be reimbursed (doctor's consultations, medicines, etc.).

• If you are from an EEA country (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), your national system covers you in Belgium. Before leaving your country, you must acquire a Health insurance european card. This card covers you in case of illness abroad, and is valid for a maximum of one year. This card will allow you to join a health insurance company in Belgium and to have most of your medical expenses reimbursed.
  However, it is also worth taking out a Comprehensive mobility insurance policy for the period of your stay.
  
• If you are from a country outside the EEA, you MUST take out welfare cover, either with a Comprehensive insurance policy taken out in your country, or by taking out insurance in Belgium.
  
• If you are from a country outside the EEA, you MUST have welfare cover to stay in Belgium either by means of a Comprehensive insurance policy taken out in your home country, or by taking out insurance in Belgium with one of the health insurance companies mentioned above (approximately €10/month).

In addition, all students registered with ULg are covered for civil liability and bodily damages for any accident linked to university activities, in Belgium and abroad.

Medical consultations  

All properly registered ULg students can receive consultations at the C.H.U. (Sart Tilman University Hospital) and at the Polycliniques Brull (City Centre). As long as you have proper health insurance, these consultations will be reimbursed in full. Don't forget to give the registration number on your student card when you register for the consultation.
