Language learning

An institutional priority

"As from 2010, ULg will not only be a university where students come out with a degree, but also everyday fluency in a foreign language." Blog of B. Rentier, Rector at ULg. January 2007

NEW! Translation and interpreting at Liège

LanguesSeptember 2008 will see the start of studies previously absent from Liège: translation and interpreting.

Currently focusing on four languages (English, Dutch, German and Spanish), these studies aim to train high-level language technicians, capable of dealing with every type of written material (business, political, legal, literary, etc.) and translating contents into the here and now while respecting the context and the author's intention.

These new courses will be organised in conjunction with the "Haute Ecole" of Liège (HEL) and the University of Liège (ULg), who share expertise in this domain. The degrees obtained (bachelors and masters) will be granted by both institutions. More informations...

At the same time, the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters is reinforcing its masters degrees in Modern Languages and Literature with a specialisation in translation. Besides the "English-French" option, students can choose between "Dutch-French", "German-French" and, for our numerous German-speaking students, "French-German". These masters degrees also provide the opportunitiy to learn Chinese or Japanese. Two new courses, each worth 10 credits, are on offer: initiation in Chinese and initiation the Japanese. This unique opportunity in the French-speaking part of Belgium, is fully in line with the development of Asiatic languages and cultures at ULg. The Confucius Institute and the Cejul (Centre d'Etudes japonaises) are participating actively in it.

Language classes within the courses

Numerous language courses and courses in foreign languages are organised in all areas of study, beginning in the first year of the bachelor's degree. See this page.
