As there are a great number of opportunities to learn and use languages and to discover foreign cultures both at the University of Liège and within the Liège Region, the University of Liège and its Higher Institute of Modern Languages have taken the initiative of inviting the Region's linguistic, cultural, political and economic actors to work together on a ‘Year of Languages,' from January to December 2012.

The project aims to create a genuine dynamic within the Liège Region by:

• Bringing together all the events which highlight languages planned for the University and the Liège area (educational programmes, lectures, conferences, theatre, cinema, all kinds of meetings and activities) by developing a general programme (in the form of a structured diary of events).
• And by creating new initiatives (round tables, study days, competitions, festivities, etc.) to round out and complete this programme, which is aimed at the whole of the Liège public.

The programme is presented and accessible according to the type of activity, the type of public targeted and the languages concerned. In this way each person can thus access the events which interest them.

Each activity will be announced according to the aforementioned criteria (language, category and type of public) and integrated into a general programme which will be regularly updated. This programme is divided up in the following way:

• 8 activity categories: (1) Linguistics and Philology (2) Didactics (teaching and learning) (3) Specialised Language of Communication (sciences and professions) (4) Translation (5) Literature (6) Culture, the arts and events (7) Conviviality (8) Miscellaneous.

• 6 types of public access: (a) reserved for specialists (b) students and an informed public (c) open to the general public (d) children and young adolescents (e) by registration only (f) for information only (not open).

• And at least 15 languages: French, Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Modern Greek, Arab, Turkish, sign language and others.

We very much hope to be able to count on the participation in this major regional project to raise awareness of foreign languages and cultures of everyone who is active in the field of foreign languages and cultures, and we thus ask you to inform us about any events you know of in order that the 2012 Year of Languages programme can bring together and present a maximum of events which could interest all those who appreciate languages. This programme of activities aims to inform the Liège public of the texture and contours of the different activities related to languages and cultures they might wish to participate in. As it is constantly being updated we thus ask you to consult it regularly.

Each activity is open and available on the basis of three criteria: the language, the category of event and the public it is aimed at. Each person can thus access straightaway the events which interest them.

The programme presents a large number of events concerning at least 15 languages (French, Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Modern Greek, Arab, Turkish and sign language, etc.).
