Doctorate (HUE)

Admission of students from countries outside the European Union to a doctorate (3rd cycle)

Admission

The 3rd cycle is the highest level of university studies.

It includes :

  • doctoral research, for which the student is counted as qualified by holding a certificate of instruction in research techniques
  • work performed as part of preparation for a dissertation and its defence, which upon completion earns the student the academic degree of doctor (Ph.D)

Admission to 3rd cycle studies is reserved for students who are holders of a Master's diploma (2nd cycle or equivalent), received after 5 years of study (300 credits/ECTS).

You can apply for 3rd cycle studies if you have:

  • a diploma of higher education obtained after 5 years of study with a general average of at least 14/20 for the master degree and at least 12/20 during the last year of studies
  • A thesis or dissertation project
  • written approval from a supervisor
  • a description of proven and documented resources upon which you will draw to pay for your studies. You can check the page marked "Cost of Studies " for more information.

In order to see whether your diploma allows you to be admitted to doctoral study, please check the General Rules for Admission.

In order to find a faculty sponsor, you may consult the university course bulletin and/or the research directory for ULg.

We also suggest consulting the General Rules for Doctorates.

Rules for Admission and Registration

If you want to begin 3rd cycle studies at ULg, you are required to furnish the Admissions Office with the following documents:

  • Application form for admission filled in and signed
  • a certificate of nationality, valid for the year in which the student registers (or a copy of your passport)
  • a copy of your diploma attesting completion of secondary studies (baccalaureate)
  • an exact copy of your diploma(s), awarded by higher education institutions or institutions of higher learning (including
    a notarised translation, if necessary)
  • official copies of grades in each of your years of  higher education studies, even for years in which you failed
    (with notarised translation, if necessary)
  • documentation on your activities or studies over the last 5 years, unless these years are covered by your most recent diploma
  • a cover letter describing your reasons for wishing to pursue the chosen doctorate
  • written approval from a faculty sponsor at ULg who agrees to direct your research
  • a dissertation or thesis project description

On a case-by-case basis the doctoral college in this instance may permit you to register:

  • for the doctorate, directly, and for doctoral research
  • for doctoral research only
  • for a supplementary year of study, to allow you to acquire knowledge in subject areas in which you had been lacking,
in order to be admitted to 3rd cycle studies.

After you have received a letter from the Admissions Service authorizing you to register, you can come in person to
the Registrar's office. Registration is open year round. If the doctoral college requires you to take a test prior to being admitted to 3rd cycle studies (60 credits maximum), you must register for the test before November 30 of the academic year in question.
